Born on 6th August 1934 in Constance on Lake Constance
Married, four children, protestant.
After studying law and doing a doctorate at the University of Freiburg, opened an independent legal practice in Freiburg in 1968.
1972 - 1982: SPD [Social Democratic Party] member of the German Bundestag [Lower House of the Federal Parliament], member of the Finance Committee of the German Bundestag.
February 1978 - April 1982: Parliamentary Secretary of State under the Federal Minister of Finance.
16th November 1982 onwards: Lord Mayor of Freiburg im Breisgau.
23rd September 1990 and again on 18th October 1998: Re-elected as Lord Mayor of Freiburg im Breisgau.
30th June 2002: Left office as Lord Mayor after 20 years of service.
Autumn 2002 - Nov. 2005: Advisor on municipal politics to the Federal Minster of the Interior, Mr. Schily.
Until 2015-31-12: Lawyer at Graf Friedrich von Westphalen & Partner in Freiburg im Breisgau.
